The online visit
Your gut concern comes first
What an online visit can involve
Telehealth means meeting a clinician at a distance, through a call or an online exchange. A clinician is the person assessing your health.
A useful distinction
Online care describes how you meet. It does not name a treatment.
Ask how the conversation will happen
Picture the visit before you pay for it. Ask for a plain account of what happens after you sign up.
Will we speak live, or will you read my answers later?
Can I ask questions in my own words?
What happens if the connection fails?
Beside the evidence
The clinician needs enough information
Guidance checked in September 2026 says you can become a doctor’s patient through an online visit without meeting in person first. The care must still meet the standards expected at an in-person visit.
Under this guidance, a questionnaire with a set list of answers is not enough on its own. The clinician must get the details needed to assess you and be able to ask more questions.
The group publishing this advice is named the Federation of State Medical Boards. State licensing boards are its members. Your state makes the rules your doctor has to follow.
Read the medical-board policy
Keep room for an in-person visit
Ask how the clinician will decide whether an online visit can cover your concern.
What would call for an exam in person?
If a test is needed, who arranges it?
Who talks me through the results?
Beside the evidence
Some questions need more information
The advice puts the clinician in charge of getting any needed exams or tests done. That may mean doing them, arranging them elsewhere, or asking another clinician to help.
Check the policy on tests and referrals
